Reflections from David Mathews

"The issue is having control over one's life . . . getting food on the table. What the other guy does affects what you have on the table. . . . The work we are doing is political: we are giving the community the capacity to stand up."

-Samuel Maruta
NGO Programme Manager
Harare, Zimbabwe

"With the Internet, we as citizens have access to so much more information than we've ever had before . . . but the public in general doesn't know what to do with this information most of the time. . . . this is one way to bring the 'public' to a place where they can contribute their ideas or visions and in this way start making a difference."

-Kareen Lively
NCO Project Manager
and Facilitator
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Sharing Experiences

Participants in the 2007 Public Policy Workshop and Deliberative Democracy Workshop came together from many places, from many walks of life, and with diverse backgrounds. Participants brought their unique experiences and passions to Dayton to share with and learn from others.

According to Dr. David Mathews, "We've begun to suspect that more is going on here than 10 workshops. Why do people come here? What is it that we share? It is more than the workshops."
