Kettering Foundation How can citizens and government officials work together to solve society's common problems? Public-Government Relationship

Kettering studies citizens’ views of the political system, government, and their own citizenship. It explores the effects of demonstrating the contributions of a deliberative citizenry to policy making, and conducts collaborative research with elected officials and government agencies.

Citizens and the Political System
In most countries, the state was in power before there was a measure of popular sovereignty, and the liberty of citizens was based upon a dispensation from the state.

Elected Officials
Instead of quarrelsome debates, deliberative conversations provide a constructive way for legislators to talk about issues.

Government Agencies
Public engagement with government agencies may be less efficient in administration, but an engaged citizenry can provide richer understandings of problems, a range of permissible actions, and ultimately the public will required to implement policy decisions.
