The Parable of the Blobs and Squares
Years ago, Edgar Cahn, professor emeritus of law at the University of the District of Columbia, heard Kettering Foundation President David Mathews address a group of non-profits in Washington DC. Mathews used “blobs” and “squares” to describe a quandary that foundations encounter in trying to enlist the community to get at critical social problems. In Cahn’s book No More Throw Away People he devotes a chapter to recounting Mathews’ parable as a way to think about how TimeBanking might provide a way to value the contribution of blobs and engage them as genuine partners.
Recently, TimeBanks USA’s British counterpart engaged graphic artists to produce a cartoon version of Mathews’ story.
